After spending a lot of time writing ‘My Northern Soul’ and touring the US, UK and Ireland Declan was kind of burned out but needed to keep the wheels on the bus. As part of the live shows he was performing a number of songs from earlier albums. He found pressure in some of the older stuff that he could really play as a solo act. He came up with the idea of re-recording some older stuff and as a way of getting folks back into the studio mindset. He picked eight songs and went into the Blast Furnace Studio here in Derry with a couple of his old pals. ‘Wally’ Wallace joined on drums, Jonny Nutt played bass, Jennifer Kelly on keys and Dan Millar on guitar. Produced and mixed by Rory Donaghy.

Recorded at ‘Need To Know’
recording studio, California
As the lockdown kicked in, Declan was thinking that he may never preform or write again. Then out of the blue came an email from Brian at the ‘Need To Know’ record label in California, asking if he was interested in working together. With nothing to lose, he sent a number of demos and waited to see the reply. To his delight, Brian asked if he wanted to come out to California and record with his house band. So just as flying became a thing again he got all the paper work needed to travel needed and headed to sunny Cali. We recorded twelve songs in a week. Brian then pulled in other musicians and finished the album.

Recorded at The Lone Moor Road
‘The Path Of Most Resistance’ was largely written and recorded during lockdown in Declan’s home studio. While much of the album is born from that period, several of the songs reach back further, drawn from older ideas that had been waiting for the right moment to resurface. Revisited and reworked with fresh perspective, these tracks sit seamlessly alongside the newer material, giving the record a layered quality.

For the ‘Hi-Flats’ album, Declan McLaughlin teamed up with acclaimed producer, Dougal McPartland to produce eleven powerful tracks that blend a fresh style of modern country music with the energy and arrangements of folk. Themes of murder, lust, emigration, addiction, exploitation, dreams, and regret run through the album, but with a unique and unexpected twist that sets Declan McLaughlin apart as one of today’s most compelling Irish singer-songwriters. The Hi-Flats lineup features vocals by Leanne Doherty and a blend of traditional instruments like banjo, button accordion, and fiddle, mixed with modern loops and sounds that give it a contemporary realism lacking in most popular music.

The songs are guitar driven and reflect a more rock sounds that any other material they had recorded before.
